A Westie is a nickname for a West Highland White Terrier. In the 1700's Westies were started by the Malcom Clan breeding them on the Estate called, Poltalloch or another name for them, Roseneath Terrier in Scotland. In 1896 the dog was shown in Scottish Dog Shows known as the West Highland White Terrier. This referred back to the Northwest part of Scotland where they came from. Westies were first shown in America in 1906 and have wowed Americans ever since. Currently they are #46 on the AKC list of most popular dogs.
